Sustainable Seafood

The theme for this year’s dinner is sustainable seafood. TMA is committed to promoting Blue Tech & Blue Jobs in a manner that supports sustainable use of the oceans, and so we have worked with local suppliers to provide a three-course dinner that has been locally sourced. There will be a raw bar of Carlsbad oysters and San Diego sea urchins during the reception preceding the dinner. The reception will take place among the exhibits of innovative maritime technology, so be sure to take advantage of the chance to learn something new.

Special thanks to Slow Food Urban San Diego, our dinner co-sponsor.

We would also like to thank Grow Foods, Carlsbad Aquafarms, and the San Diego Fiserhmen’s Working Group for providing our sustainable seafood.

Guest Speaker – A ‘Living Legend’

Sylvia Earle is a world-renowned oceanographer, explorer, writer and entrepreneur. She has served as the chief scientist at NOAA and as explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society,.In 2009 she won the TED Prize, and she is recognized by the Library of Congress as a “Living Legend.” She is a dynamic speaker, and you will not want to miss this opportunity.

2011 Maritime Awards

For the third year, The Maritime Alliance has collaborated with organizations throughout the region to acknowledge those individuals or organizations whose achievements and contributions to the maritime community are truly exemplary in their fields. Awards are presented in two categories – recognizing contributions to the community at-large and for achievements in the technology industry.

We thank them for their outstanding contributions, which benefit the entire maritime community.

Maritime Community Awards

Alliance Building Award – Fishermen’s Working Group

Once described as “famously independent sea cowboys”, commercial fishermen based in Point Loma banded together in an effort to reinvent their industry and formed the San Diego Fishermen’s Working Group. They reached out to organizations such as the Port of San Diego and California Coastal Conservancy, working together to promote a more ecologically sound business model. They have developed direct marketing channels, allowing them to sell the freshest seafood in the region direct to consumers at the docks and farmers’ markets. Their collaborative approach is applauded throughout the community for positive outcomes, both economic and ecological.

Educational Outreach Award – Dave Massey, educator

Dave Massey may have retired from teaching in the Santee school district, but his commitment to science education is undiminished. As a program manager for the San Diego Science Alliance he helps provide STEM based trainings to teachers, enabling them to teach science through experiential learning activities. Through his work with the Maritime STEM Fest, Dave added a maritime focus to his activities and was motivated to bring the SeaPerch program to San Diego. In the past year he has provided trainings and workshops to dozens of teachers and students, who learn how to make and operate an underwater ROV. Dave continues to grow the SeaPerch San Diego effort throughout the county and support STEM education through numerous organizations and partnerships.

Environmental Leadership Award – Southwest Fisheries Science Center (NOAA)

The Southwest Fisheries Science Center, under the leadership of Dr. Cisco Werner, is the research arm of NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service in the Southwest United States. Center scientists conduct biological, economic and oceanographic research on marine resources throughout the Pacific Ocean and in the Southern Ocean off Antarctica to ensure that these resource populations remain healthy and at a sustainable level. Noteworthy in their efforts to monitor the environment is the dynamic way the scientists have connected with the civilian marine community. Their efforts have substantially accelerated their data collection processes. Based on input from the marine community they have inspired a new level of positive collaboration between the marine industry, environmental groups and NOAA. On a local level they have worked extensively with captains from fishing vessels on our coasts to conduct studies of highly migratory species like albacore, developed acoustic survey processes for ground fish and forage fish, monitored habitat resources with remotely operated vehicles aboard commercial fishing boats, developed financial impact models, and initiated other cooperative research projects. On an international level they have partnered with scientists from neighboring countries like Mexico to expand the science monitoring to include the entire ecosystem shared by all. They are true leaders in Environmental Outreach.

International Maritime Partner – CICESE

Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada (CICESE) is one of the leading science and technical postgraduate and R&D institutions in Mexico, and the premier center for maritime technology. CICESE has had extensive cross-border interaction, supporting multiple events of The Maritime Alliance, working with Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute on developing sustainable aquaculture, and generally playing a key role as a major scientific partner and resource for the Mega-region of San Diego and Imperial counties and the state of Baja California.

Marine Science Teaching Award – Rick Nichols, Mar Vista High School

Rick may have come to teaching late in his career, but in the nine years he has been teaching fundamentals of maritime technology at Mar Vista High School, as part of the San Diego County Office of Education’s Regional Occupation Program, he has had a positive impact on hundreds of students. With a military and public safety background, Rick brings real-life experience motivating his students as they prepare to become US Coast Guard-certified for maritime careers. The last two years Rick has supported the Maritime STEM Fest with interactive demos by groups of his students. The enthusiasm, respect and knowledge they displayed was a credit to his teaching and leadership.

Maritime Community Leadership Award – Sharon Cloward, president, SD Port Tenants Association

Sharon Cloward is President of the San Diego Port Tenants Association (SDPTA), which represents more than 300 businesses in the five cities which surround San Diego Bay. Sharon is a catalyst for developing relationships with public officials and community leaders. She worked on America’s Cup 92 and America’s Cup 95. She was a Committee Member of the Superbowl Relations Committee, past Chairman of the America’s Schooner Cup Races, past President and current Board member of Fleet Week San Diego. Sharon is also the founder of the SDPTA’s annual bay clean up effort know as Operation Clean Sweep. This annual event has grown to include over a thousand volunteers and over $100,000 of in-kind services provided by the many industrial tenants on the water front and has removed hundreds of tons of waste and debris from the bottom of the bay and surrounding waterfront public access areas. She is also a founder of San Diego Bay’s Working Waterfront Group, a consortium of water front businesses focused on protecting the 25,000 jobs on the San Diego water front. She is seen by the regional leaders of government as a problem solver. As leader of the SDPTA she successfully pursues advocacy in public policy and issues concerning tidelands, sponsors programs and large scale events for the benefit of charities and environmental issues, and encourages ongoing research into best practices and environmental stewardship of tidelands. Her leadership is well known, admired, and example to follow.

Sustainable Seafood Award – San Diego Coastkeeper

San Diego Coastkeeper, the region’s largest environmental organization protecting inland and coastal waters has been developing a local, sustainable seafood resource website to help San Diegans become more familiar with local fisheries and fishermen. The resource describes what local seafood means in San Diego County and lists retailers and restaurants that sell it. The website will help fill the gap between the global information that is available and local places where residents make their purchasing decisions. By empowering people to make more sustainable decisions, we can dramatically reduce our carbon footprint and help our local economy.
Founded in 1995, San Diego Coastkeeper protects the region’s inland and coastal waters for the communities and wildlife that depend on them by blending education, community empowerment and advocacy.

And presented by the Maritime Museum of San Diego

The Robert and Laura Kyle Chair in Maritime History at the Maritime Museum of San Diego – Dr. Iris Engstrand, University of San Diego

Dr. Engstrand has received numerous academic honors. She is a trustee of the SD Natural History Museum and the SD Maritime Museum, past president of the American Historical Association Pacific Coast Branch and of the Western History Association. Dr. Engstrand has lived and traveled extensively in Spain and Mexico and lectures widely in both English and Spanish. She has degrees in history, with majors and minors in the fields of California, Mexico, Latin America and the Spanish Southwest history, biology and Spanish. Dr. Engstrand has recently been awarded the prestigious medal of the Order of Isabel la Católica (Isabel the Catholic — ruler of Spain in 1492) by Juan Carlos, King of Spain, for outstanding contributions to the history of Spain in the Americas.

Maritime Technology Awards

Lifetime Achievement – Innovation – Joe Hughes

Joe is a fitting recipient for the first “Lifetime Achievement Award – Maritime Innovation” because of his importance in helping develop the maritime technology community in San Diego and the U.S. Joe earned bachelor and master of science degrees in Nuclear Physics. He saw active duty from 1954 to 1957 as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and continued to serve in the Reserves until 1972, rising to the rank of major, and became qualified to fly both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He went on to work for legendary companies including North American Rockwell, Litton Industries and General Dynamics (Convair Division) before being recruited in fall 1975 to be general manager of the Systems Division of San Diego-based Hydro Products, which was started in 1960 and was then owned by Tetra Tech. Joe was elevated to the presidency of Hydro Products in 1978. From 1976 through 1981, Hydro Products grew from 150 to 550 employees with representation in 54 countries worldwide. In 1982, Tetra Tech was purchased by Honeywell. Joe was vice president for undersea technology for Honeywell from December 1983 until his retirement in March 1988. Honeywell was unable to continue the entrepreneurial spirit that drove Hydro Products to introduce so many innovative new products to the offshore industries, the nuclear industries and the U.S. Navy. But the maritime technology industry in San Diego, in the U.S. and aboard was seeded with Hydro Products technical and management talent that has been the genesis of many of the ocean technology leaders of today. Joe has been consulting and coaching since 1988. He currently serves on three boards of directors.

Lifetime Achievement Award – Desalination – Gonzalo “GG” Pique

Gonzalo G. Pique served as the chief executive officer and president of Energy Recovery, Inc. from August 2002 to February 16, 2011. He has more than 30 years experience in the water treatment industry. He joined ERI in 2000 as a consultant and in 2001 became executive vice president. Gonzalo served as the group vice president of Latin America for US Filter Corp. from 1993 to 1999, when he became group president of integrated companies, where he served until joining ERI. He served as a director of ERI from 2008 until this past June and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the International Desalination Association since October 2007. His academic degrees include a bachelor’s of science in chemical engineering from the University of Connecticut and an MBA from Hartford University.

What sets us apart:

Level-playing field: unlike a traditional trade show, all exhibits in the Maritime Business & Technology Summit are table-top displays (limit two per company)

Affordable: by limiting booth size, we help companies control expenses; we also keep our rates low ($500 per tabletop, $250-$350 per attendee)

Intimate venue: with 30-40 exhibitors and up to 250 attendees, the conference is large enough to ensure a varied audience and small enough to make an impact

High-level contacts: we typically attract a large share of decision-makers and stipulators from government and military agencies

Fees (two-day event):

$1,000 – Exhibitor with one tabletop, two attendees

$445 – Exhibitor with one tabletop, one attendee

$195 – corporate attendee

$145 – government, military or university

Warfighters, law enforcement professionals, and first responders turn to Esri for the geospatial technology to access, analyze, and visualize complex data and get answers to what’s happening and where. Esri, the world leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, provides a wide variety of communities with a standards-based enterprise platform for servers, desktops, and mobile devices.

Innovative uses of GIS as a critical infrastructure include the Commercial Joint Mapping Toolkit (CJMTK), which the U.S. Department of Defense relies upon as the toolkit standard for C2I developers; NATO’s Core Geographic Services project for support of mission-critical and time-sensitive decisions; and the ruggedized, field-ready CJTMK Geospatial Appliance (CGA) that provides on demand, mission-ready maps using National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) geospatial data to warfighters, analysts, and mission planners.
